The Value of Nightmares

The Value of Nightmares

Jeremy Taylor, Guest
Waking Times
Whenever any dream is remembered, it is an indication that the waking mind has a creative, transformative role to play in the evolution of whatever issue the dream is presenting. For millions of years, the ability to pay immediate and focused attention to nasty, threatening stuff has been a primary survival test. The creatures who pay effective attention to threats tend to survive, and the ones who don’t tend not to survive. In this way, we have been shaped by natural selection to be inherently predisposed to pay attention to ugly, scary, and menacing experiences.

Why Nightmares Are Good

As a consequence, when the deep source within (from which all dreams spring, spontaneously and unbidden) has potentially important information to convey to the waking consciousness, it is very likely to dress that material up in the form of a “nightmare,” simply to get our attention. This leads to one of the most ironic general principles of dream work: the more horrifying and distressing the dream experience, the greater the potential gift of increased understanding and creative energy the dream has to offer.
We usually call such dreams “nightmares.” The generic message of any nightmare is: Wake up. Pay attention. There is a survival issue being brought to your attention here! Sometimes the “survival issues” raised by nightmares are related to actual physical health. Most often, however, the nightmare is trying to draw attention to questions of emotional and spiritual authenticity in the dreamer’s life.

Why We Remember Nightmares

In my experience, all dreams (and particularly nightmares) come in the service of health and wholeness. This means that no dream, no matter how distressing or menacing, ever came to anyone to say, “Nyah, nyah, you’ve got these problems and you can’t do anything about them!” The very fact that a dream is remembered in the first place means that the dreamer actually has at his or her disposal all the courage, creativity, strength, and wisdom necessary to respond creatively and transformatively to even the worst “problem” that the dream presents. (If the dreamer were not in possession of all the energies required for positive, creative, transformative response, the dream would simply not be remembered.) This is true not only at the level of individual, psychospiritual health and wholeness, but at the level of world society, culture, and collective human struggle as well.
Ironically, for this reason I take heart every time I have (or hear about) a dream that involves large, planet-wide problems like destruction of the environment, plague, military conflict, or other massive disruption of society. The fact that we remember such dreams suggests that we are able to respond creatively and effectively to these problems, in the same fashion that dreams addressing seemingly “insoluble” personal problems always indicate our ability to deal with those problems. Nightmares may also provide symbolic suggestions and specific creative inspirations, provided we have the wit and wisdom to pay attention.

Historical Nightmares

However, in some cases the specific creative possibilities proposed by the dream are even more challenging than our immediate experience of the problems themselves. Among these challenging dreams are the really terrible nightmares I call “worst case dreams.” Hindu and Buddhist dream workers have understood for centuries that these worst case dreams are deeply associated with the dreamer’s effective spiritual development.
It is interesting to note that John Newton, the composer of the hymn “Amazing Grace,” was converted to Christianity and transformed into an ardent antislavery activist by just such a nightmare: He dreamed of seeing “all of Europe consumed in a great raging fire” while he was the captain of a slave ship.

Dreams and Spiritual Development

One reason why such distressing dream experiences regularly come to people who are deeply engaged in their own spiritual development, or those working in the world to relieve the sufferings of others, is that the only place where evil can truly be faced and overcome is within. This means that people who are sincerely engaged in trying to make the world a better place must face and overcome this order of evil if they are to succeed. The more sincere and effective one’s spiritual development and one’s reconciling work in the world, the more likely it is that one will have worst case dreams of this archetypal order.
In that sense, the worst case dreams are little “training films” for the spiritual warrior. Another way of looking at such dreams is that they are “rescue missions” undertaken by the dreaming psyche in the as-yet-unredeemed depths of the archetypal Shadow and the Inchoate Potential in the collective unconscious.

The Magic Mirror that Never Lies

Initially, it always seems as though the most difficult task faced by the dreamer is to look into the “magic mirror that never lies” and take more responsibility for the symbolic reflections of our weaknesses and failures. However, over time, it becomes clear that an even more challenging task is to acknowledge the size and scope of our creative gifts and our ability to transform ourselves and our world. The worst case dream calls upon the dreamer not only to see and accept the depths of depravity that reside in every human psyche, but even more importantly, to become more conscious of and responsible for our ability to face, overcome, and give transformative, creative, and spiritual expression to those archetypal shadow energies.

Who Plays the Lottery? Try These Numbers 306 & 235

Who plays the lottery?? I dreamed these numbers, 235 & 306.. If these numbers have a vibration you can win with, by all means use them. I trust these are good numbers cause I seldom see numbers clearly in my dreams. They usually fade out, garbled up, or something weird. I think it's my waking frustration with my dyslexia that finds its way into my dreams, but I digress. I think these numbers must be worth a lottery try!! An no, I can't use them, it don't work like that for me

Okay, so I guess by now, you all know I am a Psychic and I do Psychic readings. Some folks ask, well if you are, then why don't you hit the lottery and get rich?? Unfortunately, it just don't work that way. If it did, we would become materialistic and lose all our psychic powers. Well, not exactly, but it sure would be a lot more difficult to be in touch with the spirit world if you are surrounded by material things that you used the spirit world to acquire. The worlds don't counter each other, they just should be in balance. And since we are made of flesh, sometimes, having the power to guess the next lottery number with great success, could lead to becoming a rather arrogant person filled with a lot of hubris.

So, no most times, we cannot predict our own troubles. In fact, we don't often see the death of loved ones in our family while we may see the death of one in someone else's family.

We are here to help others navigate through their lives. When we need help we learn how to go within, quiet our minds and from time to time, seek out another psychic. It has to do with our personal emotions. You know, those things that go bump in the night. If we are too emotionally tied to the answer, it acts as a block rather than an open door. But when it comes to others, we often can see their emotions and sometimes see ours mirrored in theirs.

Some of us are empaths, others are telepaths, some are clairvoyant, time travelers, remote viewers, heck they use all kinds of names to describe our paranormal abilities. In fact, we have been called "possessed." I laugh at that one, because it is merely having the ability to see the unseen. And in that vein, if we are possessed so is everyone, cause we all breath unseen air!! We merely are using our intuition ability.

The paranormal is just another name for "it" as well. Some of us use different "tools" to make the connection. It varies from person to person just like any talent would vary. I am a firm believer that every single person in the whole world has access to their intuition. How we develop it as we grow older depends on the influences we experience while growing through our life experiences.

For me, I see things, scenes, like dreams, they come quickly sometimes, other times they may not. Sometimes it comes as a feeling, or sensation, I hear stuff, and move through experiences when I do a reading for someone.

I use 12 cowrie shells, they sorta help me ground myself, while I have also used other stuff too. The cowries help me a lot because they seem to open me up and let me travel.

Psychic readers have been called a mind readers. But I would say that it's more of an ability to read Energy. As we travel through our life experiences we pick up stuff along the way. Some of us don't know that we are doing it.. But we are… A Psychic Reader can "pick" it up and bring it out of the unseen world and give it a picture. Sometimes, folks get a reading and they want it to tell them the future. Some readers may move in that directions… I prefer to look at possible outcomes based on choices. Predictions seldom come true exactly as they are predicted because of the many variable possibilities and probabilities that can happen. I would not trust anyone who is perfectly certain that a particular thing is gonna happen in a certain way.

Some years ago, I got a reading that said I would have a van. At the time, I really needed a car, but hey, had no idea where that would come from. It took several years to manifest.

This same reading told me that I would be doing some writing, spiritual writing as it were.. And I was like, yeah, right, when will that happen???? But, again, several years later, and I do mean several years later I am writing.

Some may say it was the power of suggestion. I believe there is nothing new under the sun, and my reader just happened to see that time line at that point in my life when I was seeking a reading from him.

Each reading is different. I allow Spirit to guide me, so I often ask folks that if they talk about their readings to another person, just let them know that it is very personal, and very related to them and their situation.

I follow a strict law of confidentiality. Your reading is safe with me. I am invested in my integrity in the work that I do, and anyone who gets a reading from me can feel safe that their reading will not be posted on Facebook. LOL.

Follow-up readings are welcomed, but after a reading is done, it is best to let that marinate for a bit, and check in later on, maybe in another month or 2. However if we don't get to all the pressing questions at our first meeting, I am willing to set another one, shortly after. The readings usually last about 1.5 hours so there is a possibility that some things won't be covered. Typically folks who come to me, have lived quite a full life so there are always things that may come up that may take some time to explore.

I will be blogging more and more, so feel free to post your questions and I will answer them as soon as I am able.

Peace & Blessings,
Nana Baakan

Spiritual Counseling-Psychic Readings-Workshops

Spiritual Counseling/Psychic Readings/I Ching Seminars

Here Is How I Do It.

A. Psychic Readings.

  • Readings can be done via, Skype, Oovo, Google Hangout, Yahoo video chat, etc. That way where we are located won’t interfere with getting the reading. After we determine which chat process we want to use, then we need to make sure we are in each other’s friends list so everything can go smoothly when we finally meet.
  • I ask folks to get me two questions before the reading. Then, I will do the consulting with the Oracle ahead of time, so as to say on the actual reading time. Typically, one question requires a series of inquiries that may take another 10 0r 15 minutes to complete. Sometimes, I may have to contact you again to help restructure the question so we can get the best answer. With the I Ching, the way you ask the question makes all the difference in the answer you receive.
  • I ask for a love offering of $50 for a reading that lasts about 1.5 hours. I ask folks to pay via PayPal (nanabaakan@voicesofafrica.net) in advance of our reading. If you don't have PayPal I can send you an invoice which can be paid with a credit card. Or if you wish you can mail it to me.
  • Then we set up an appointment for the reading to take place.
  • After the reading is over, I will send you a copy of your reading via a download link for your reference in the future.

B. I Ching Workshops

The I Ching (Yi Jing) is an amazing oracular system developed in Ancient China more than 5,000 years ago. It continues to have relevance up until this day. Its philosophy is its name; that is “The Book of Changes.” This oracle is the “pocket psychologist.”  It is designed to teach anyone how to move with the rhythm of life as it ebbs and flows.  It was first developed by an intensely Spiritual Man by the name of Fu Shi who's ethnicity harkens back to according to some Africa in some reports... In fact, there is a strong correlation between the I Ching and the Ifa system of Nigeria, West Africa.

Fu Shi, having spent some time studying the markings on a tortoise shell was inspired to develop a system that would help humanity understand the every day changes as well as the celestial changes in the Universe. He started with just two lines, then three, called trigrams and develop these trigrams in reflections of the elements around him. wood, Earth, metal, water, fire. From there came the repeating cycles productive, destructive, controlling and dissolving. Of course as with all Ancient Texts, changes, editions and subtractions have been made, especially in translating it from the Ancient Mandarin.

All in all it comes to us, and, from much experience it has given me, it shows to be one of the best systems around.

WORKSHOP OVERVIEW
  • Facilitator: Nana Baakan will facilitate these I Ching Workshops. I have been using this system without fail for over 30 years. It has guided me through some trying and joyful times. It has given me a stronger ability to intuit and helped me to relinquish my dependence upon it. Over time, one becomes so in tune, that they can "forecast" the hexagrams that may come up in a reading, providing confirmation for each life situation that it is consulted on.
  • Participants: All are welcomed.  We need at least 6 commitments before we can start a workshop.
  • Coordinator: Will be ask to volunteer in return for their sessions being free.
    • Duties of Coordinator: Keep contact information for of all attendees.
    • Be the contact person between attendees and Nana Baakan
    • Keep attendance records.
    • Send out reminders for each workshop 3 days in advance.
    • Feel free to contact Nana directly with any of the questions you need to.
  • Description: This workshop will give you firsthand knowledge about the use of this oracle for your personal and spiritual development. It will be a beginners course, of 6 sessions, for starters. If folks wish to continue on after the first 6 sessions that will be great too.
  • Cyber Workshop: Everyone should have Gmail account! That way we can all get on Google hang-out. The can also get the Google Hang-out app on their phone. I am not too sure if Apple phones have the app for Google hang-out though. We need to look into that. Either way we will have folks on the phone or on the internet. Skype or Ovoo is another option, since they do have group chat. I prefer Google Hangout cause you can record it.
  • Web Camera: Everyone needs to have a web camera on their phone or on their computer. We really need video, so folks can see what I am writing on the board. You can try eBay or amazon.com for a web cam, if not, then you can always go to someone’s house for the video chat if they have a video camera on their computer.
  • Everyone to check out the Nana Baakan Discusses Understanding the I Ching Videos on YouTube.
  • Durations: I would like to do 6 sessions, each for 1.5 hours once a week or whenever we schedule them.
    • Hour one would be for instructions
    • 30 minutes for questions and answers.
  • Love Offering: I will ask for a small love offering from each one in attendance. $120 for 6 sessions, or $100 if a person pays for all 6 sessions in advance.
    • Everyone must pay for at least two sessions in advance or $40 before the first session begins.
    • Love Offering can be sent via Paypal,(nanabaakan@voicesofafrica.net) If you do not have Paypal, and invoice can be sent that can be paid with a credit card.
